MICROWAVE MEASUREMENT
Measure the density, concentration and dry solids of water-containing media directly in the running process.
For pipes and tanks · Application-specific calibration

The multi-frequency technology used enables stable and reliable measurements to be achieved. Microwave measurement takes place whilst the process is running and provides real-time readings for tracking trends in concentration and dry matter monitoring within a water-containing medium.
Pressure and flow velocity have no effect on the transmission method used or on the optical transmittance of the medium. This is a decisive advantage over the physical measurement methods commonly available on the market for determining the concentration or density of a liquid medium.
The robust sensor technology used to capture the measurement signal is virtually wear-free.
The measurement system can be used directly on both pipework and tanks.

The MicroSinus features an on-site calibration function that enables the user to calibrate the measurement without the need for any additional equipment. Laboratory values can be easily entered via a capacitive multi-touch display, and specially developed software calculates the calibration curve.
MicroSinus is the MWM tec microwave instrument for inline density, concentration and online total solids measurement in water-containing media. Measurements are available during production; sensors are selected to suit the pipe or tank.
The following details summarise the existing product description. We will clarify the suitability for your medium and your process conditions as part of your application enquiry.
| Measurement methods | Microwave transmission using multi-frequency technology |
|---|---|
| Medium | Media containing water |
| Installation | Pipework and vessels |
| Calibration | On-site calibration with entry of laboratory values via the touchscreen |
| Interfaces | 2 × 4–20 mA, Modbus, Pt 100, USB; Profibus optional |
| Measurement accuracy according to the product description | Standard deviation: maximum 0.15 % DM |

The MicroSinus features the following interfaces: two galvanically isolated, analogue current interfaces (4–20 mA); a serial Modbus interface; an analogue Pt 100 resistance thermometer input for measuring the temperature of the medium being analysed; a USB interface for software updates and data retrieval; and, optionally, a Profibus connection.
The interfaces can be conveniently connected from the outside using the supplied M12 cable connector.
As microwaves are highly sensitive to free water molecules, the propagation speed and the resulting attenuation of the signal can be modulated very effectively. Consequently, a high level of measurement accuracy is achieved, with a standard deviation of no more than 0.15 % dry matter.
This figure describes the standard deviation, not a guaranteed error limit of ± 0.15% TS. The measuring range, medium and calibration conditions must be established for each application.
APPLICATIONS

Monitor concentrations in the production process.

Measure the dry solids of water-containing media.

Assess substrates using their process values.
MicroSinus uses a microwave transmission method to determine the density and concentration of aqueous media. The measurement is carried out whilst the process is running and provides real-time values for monitoring concentration and dry matter content.
The measurement system can be installed directly on pipework and tanks. The appropriate probe and installation configuration are selected based on the specific application.
MicroSinus features an on-site calibration function. Laboratory values are entered via the capacitive multi-touch display; the software then calculates the calibration curve from these values.
The product description lists two galvanically isolated 4–20 mA current interfaces, a serial Modbus interface, a Pt-100 input for temperature measurement and a USB port for software updates and data retrieval. A Profibus connection is available as an option.
YOUR MEASUREMENT TASK
Tell us about your medium and plant. We will assess the appropriate measurement solution.
When assessing this, the first consideration is which process parameter is required. Continuous measurement of density, concentration or TS must be based on a suitable correlation with the actual product. You should therefore define the target variable, unit and operating range before comparing individual functions. The technical specifications listed here are no substitute for an application-specific assessment.
The section on microwave density measurement explains the relationship between the sensor signal and the target variable. The calibration glossary explains the role of suitable laboratory references. For future use, the response time, signal transmission and behaviour in the event of a product change or an invalid measurement should also be defined.
A precise description of the medium, typical concentrations and temperatures, as well as details of the pipe or vessel, are helpful. Describe any additional components, gas content and the existing sampling arrangement. A sketch makes the installation situation easier to understand. Information on the laboratory reference enables a verifiable comparison with the desired display.
Also consider unusual operating conditions: start-up, cleaning, changing formulations or partially empty measuring sections. Such conditions should be taken into account during planning so that any subsequent display reading can be correctly interpreted. The necessary steps are brought together during project planning; the measurement enquiry supports the structured description of the project.
