Microwave density measurement

What does the term mean?

Microwave density measurement uses a material’s response to an electromagnetic signal as measurement information. A suitable relationship converts that response into density. This is an indirect determination rather than a separate weighing of the product.

Relevance to process measurement

For water-containing mixtures, the signal may instead be related to concentration or total solids. The task and available references determine the appropriate output. A device name alone does not establish suitability for a particular product.

How does the signal become a useful process reading?

Start with a target quantity and a defined product range. Match samples with known reference values to their sensor signals, then assess the relationship using independent check samples. The measuring point, temperature range and composition range matter during operation.

Air, deposits or recipe changes can alter signal conditions. Assess the MicroSinus configuration, installation and achievable measurement quality for the actual application. Use the applicable MWM documentation for technical performance figures.

Systematically minimise deviations

An indirect density measurement correlates the sensor signal with reference values for a specified product range. If the reading changes unexpectedly, both the product and the conditions at the measuring point should therefore be examined. Check whether the formulation, temperature or air content deviate from normal operating conditions. Also check for any deposits or changes to the installation. A new curve can only be meaningfully assessed once these possible causes have been documented and the reference samples correspond to the process conditions.

When planning a switch to a different medium, new reference samples should cover the intended operating range. The previous relationship must not be assumed simply because both products contain water. The decisive factor is whether the correlation between the signal and the target variable has been verified under the new conditions. Even an unchanged physical density does not necessarily mean that all other product properties have remained the same.

For the design, please specify the required unit, typical and extreme operating conditions, and the existing laboratory method. Describe whether the values are to be used for monitoring, quality control or control purposes. This information helps to tailor the assessment of the specific MicroSinus model to the actual measurement task.
